I was very relieved to find this product so that I could take my goldfish from my indoor tank and put them into their summer home in my garden pond for the summer. When trying to locate my pump from the previous years, my husband and I were unable to find it. I looked locally and found nothing! There was no way that my poor fish could stay in the house where their tank gets a bit warm and could get dangerous for them. As a last ditch attempt to find one, I went on Amazon; low and behold there was the exact pump that I was looking for! I was very much relieved and thankful. I purchased this pump as a package deal with the 16 watt bio/uv fish mate filter. It's a great little pump and you can't beat the price. Pump does not come with a filter pad but you can pick one up at places like Lowes or Home Depot. The inlet reciever on the Fishmate filter is a little bit small if you're running a length(5 to 6 feet or more) on a pitch. You might encounter a flow problem.

I stepped the size of the inlet up by gluing a coupling onto it and chose a hose size that fit over the coupling. This fixed the flow problem I was having. I didn't have a problem with too much flow after I did this, it was perfect. If you're running a length that's less then 5 feet(pump to filter) on a pitch, I'd recommend using the standard inlet that's given.

We have 2 of these filter/pumps - one rated at 500 gph and one rated at 250 gph. We use the smaller one for the waterfall in our pond and the larger pump is used as an aerator, water cleaner, etc. They come with 2 sections of tubing for extra height should it be needed and 2 fountain heads. We run the larger pump without a head on it for maximum flow.

One minor problem is that if you don't weight the thing down, it will eventually float. That problem is solved (as per the instructions) by taking the filter section apart and putting in some small stones. We used some flat stones in each of the 4 corners of the filter box and have not had a problem.

The filter box is easy to unhook from the pump and the filter media are easy to clean out and are reusable. We just hose the filters off. You can leave the pump in the water while you're working on the filter box. When you unhook the filter box from the pump, be sure to unplug the pump. That way there's no problem with fish getting sucked into the intake. We've never even had a close call, but if you have small fish and they get too close to the intake, they might get sucked in.

We run these filter/pumps 24/7 and plan to run the larger one all winter.
